The Prevention Network
Over November 14-16th First Christian Church of Beaver
(www.firstchristianchurchbeaver.org) coupled with The Prevention Network came
together to produce “Gerbert Comes to Beaver County.” This was a wonderful drug and
alcohol prevention piece that was received at Southside, Fairview, Monaca, and Center-
Grange Elementary schools here in Beaver County where between 900-1000 students and
adults took part. Nearly 6500 calendar-coloring books with prevention messages from
Gerbert were distributed. There are a limited number left for those who might not have
received one in their schools, at the Beaver Valley Mall or at the First Christian Church
performances.
What will make this project live on is a 30-second PSA that is currently being developed
by students at Beaver County Community College under the direction of instructors,
Trish Foley and Marie Leone. Derek Miller wrote the script and Andy Thompson acted
with Gerbert on the PSA which has a game show format entitled: “How Smart Are
You?” Be looking on commercial TV for the premiere of this great prevention PSA. If
you would like to see a very cute award-winning prevention video with Gerbert from
1993, go to First Christian’s website and take a look. I guarantee you’ll like it!
Gary L. Wackler, Minister of First Christian Church in Beaver wrote a letter to all the
children who received a calendar-coloring book. In the opening paragraph he told the
Pre-K through 3rd graders: “Life is precious and full of so many possibilities. Gerbert
and I believe you can do great things in life, but you need to make smart choices.”

Andy's Brief Bio (he's the one at the bottom of the picture):
Born in Memphis, TN, in 1961. Grew up in Abilene, TX. Moved to Dallas, TX, in 1982. Made all kinds of
products (albums, tv shows, videos, books) around a puppet character I created named "Gerbert". TV GUIDE
listed the "Gerbert" tv series as "one of the top ten children's shows for preschoolers" (March 1994). Married the
love of my life (Wendy) in June, 1988 (celebrated our 20th anniversary this year). Became a daddy (Shelton,
1990; Andrew, 1994; Avy, 2000). Became a published author (1992 - "Gerbert's Favorite Bible Stories"). Have
over 40 published books since then... And still writing.
Gerbert was created to teach and entertain. Through Gerbert children are encouraged to dream, to become
comfortable in whom they are today and to believe in whom they can be tomorrow. They are received as friends
and reminded that they are special. Gerbert helps them explore their minds, heart, feelings, and world... To touch
your heart and make you giggle, smile, or even cry is an important part of his existence. Gerbert wants to find a
place in the heart of each of us - that tiny part where only the child inside our 'grown-up' self can find... That tiny
part we must never forget.
